The business school application process is likely the most subjective and rigorous among professional graduate schools. Success in this process is not at all a function of one specific component (e.g., GMAT score – a common misconception), but rather a function of:
1. Knowing, and writing about, yourself exceptionally well.
Can you write your autobiography today and tell a compelling story about the choices you have made and the lessons you have learned thus far? Would the story “sell” well and would “critics” give it rave reviews on both writing style and content? You need to engage in serious self-reflection as soon as you can, and be comfortable with writing about yourself and your thought process. Think of the application process as writing a novel with you being both the author and the main character.
2. Packaging yourself in themes.
You must carefully select your experiences, organize them in themes, and allocate them throughout your three vehicles of control – resume, essays, and recommendations, while safely leaving other stories aside that are self-evident from your transcript or employment history, for example. Be parsimonious in what you say, yet integrate impeccably! Think of the admissions officer as a potential “date” with whom you need to leave a memorable and lasting impression. Would the officer be able to imagine you, and record you in his or her mind, in 4-5 themes after they have read and placed down your application?
3. Executing fiercely around time, resources, and people.
If you want to be a future business leader, showcase your potential now by managing your own business school application process well, and bringing it to fruition quickly and efficiently. Plan and research schools ahead of time, reach out to mentors and potential recommenders early, begin writing and re-writing soon to give yourself enough time to produce a great product. Integral Careers can work together with you along one, more, or all of the four important pieces of a successful application plan:
• Self-reflection exercise
• Application strategy & business school reasoning
• Essays writing & editing
• Admissions interview
